Midterm Topic

My primary source will be Fire!! magazine, an art publication written during the Harlem Renaissance. Fire!! was created as an attempt to present the voices of black authors and the works of black artists in a format intended to be read by other blacks. It was highly criticized for its subject matter and language and only lasted one issue. I will examine a selected piece from this magazine and look at how it interacts with the politics of respectability at the time.
