Midterm Primary Source

For my midterm essay assignment, I would like to look at an autobiographical narrative from Carlos Cortes called Rose Hill. It tells the story of scholar Cortes who grew up with a Mexican Catholic father and a Jewish mother and how the clash of cultures, religion, and race all came together to formulate Carlos' identity. In particular, I think I would close read some of the passages where he writes about his experiences in school and going through adolescence and young adulthood since that created tension both internally and within his family. These multiple identities have an interesting intersectionality especially given the time period of the 1930s and 1940s and the different regions Carlos spends his life (born in Missouri, going to college in California, visiting family in Mexico, etc).
