I will be analyzing the 1934 film Imitation of Life. By both blurring and
strongly defining the color line, John Stahl’s film Imitation of Life serves as a compelling transcript that reinforces
popular ideas about femininity and enriches discussion about the dominant
discourses of the early 20th century on motherhood and
domesticity. Through a racial lens and by playing close attention to the concept of "passing," I will write about how these different identities intersect and clash in the film.
