Midterm Topic

I will be analyzing and writing on a speech given by Maggie Lena Walker, a black businesswoman from Virginia, at the beginning of the 20th century. In her speech she criticizes black men for utilizing white women's businesses, accusing them of neglecting "[their] own women."

This piece is particularly interesting because it deals with two themes that we have touched on in class. First, it deals with intersectionality and the conflicting identity roles that can result. Second, the speech deals with the formation of a conception of race and race politics among black americans after reconstruction. The confluence of these themes in this speech I think will offer some unique insight into a historical look at intersectionality and how that complicates the idea of a unified race narrative.

The speech is titled: excerpts from "Benaiah's Valour: An Address for Men Only," delivered in St. Luke Hall, Richmond, Virginia, March 4, 1906.
