I
am writing my midterm essay about a 1967 article written by James Baldwin in The New
York Times, titled “Negroes Are Anti-Semitic Because They Are Anti-White.”
Baldwin explains why black Americans hold a disdain for Jews who have attempted
to compare the discrimination they experience to the racism blacks face in
America. He further asserts that
because Jews experience the economic and social privileges of other white
Christian Americans and participate in discriminating against blacks, blacks
view Jews as white and consequently discount their religious background. While Baldwin convincingly captures the
anger and frustration of northern urban blacks living in New York City during
the late 1960s, his broad generalizations of blacks and Jews with respect to
religion and race limit the scope of his argument.
